Natural refrigerants CO2, ammonia and hydrocarbons have been used in different HVAC & R applications for many years. With the exception of a few sectors, their market penetration has remained relatively low.
The use of natural refrigerants is certainly not new. Way back in the last century and even the century before that, air, ammonia (NH3), carbon dioxide (CO2), propane (R290), sulphur dioxide (SO2) and other refrigerants were used.

Heat released by the cooling process can be reused elsewhere in a building, for example heating in the room or for hot tap water. The heat can be used directly in another workspace, or transferred via an intermediate medium, for example via a pressurized gas boiler.
